PRESENTATION TITLE: Bringing “The Women” to the Screen Without Losing Its Bite

DESCRIPTION: Clare Booth Luce’s acidic comedy of manners, which was a hit on Broadway in 1936, was brought to the screen in 1939 with its satire intact thanks to the writing of another insightful female author, Anita Loos. This presentation by Professor Hischak is about the transition of “The Women” from stage to screen. Scenes from the acclaimed movie will be shown to illustrate how this portrayal of the Park Avenue set made for delightful and insightful comedy during the Depression.
