“Where a woman lives should not determine if she lives.” In the rural town of Dangla, Ethiopia, hospitals have historically been viewed as the place where people go to die. Through the Safe Surgery 2020 Initiative, Dangla hospital’s surgical team prioritizes women’s health by reducing the risk of maternal death. Carrying Tomorrow shares the stories of Firnus and Gojam, two mothers whose lives were saved by the head surgical officer Amsalu, a leader in the community mentorship program. These stories not only highlight the strength of women as the backbone of their communities, but also help change the perception of surgery in Ethiopia.
